Chief Montella reports that a rash of thefts from motor vehicles over
the past three weeks have occurred primarily in the north end of town (5th

March 11, 2008 - The first
wave of the Smooth Operator Campaign was a total success. A total of 118
traffic citations were issued in 8 hours. A majority of the traffic
citations were issued for maximum speed violations and the remaining
were issued for suspended/unlicensed drivers, unregistered vehicles and
expired state inspection/emissions violations. A 38 year old male was
also arrested on a bench warrant out of Philadelphia for possession of
controlled substances. I am certain that the first wave of enforcement
was a success.

January 18, 2008 - Burglar
Arrested - A 48 year old male from Chester was arrested on January 16th
2008 after an intensive 3 month burglary investigation. The suspect was
arrested on a bench warrant in Media Borough last Wednesday night.
Officers from Upper Providence Township assisted Media Borough and
subsequent to his arrest, detectives from Upper Providence and Nether
Providence Township conducted lengthy interviews. As a result, the
suspect implicated himself in numerous burglaries in Upper Providence
and Nether Providence Township dating back to October of 2007. Pursuant
to investigation, a large quantity of jewelry and foreign currency was
recovered from the suspect. Investigators are still working on leads and
are hopeful that additional property will be recovered.
January 14, 2008 Officer Larence Baker and Chief David
Montella spent the morning speaking with students at St Mary Magdalen's about
drug and alcohol awareness and peer pressure. Officer Baker demonstrates
how steroids made a student look huge in an Eagles jersey, however the
benefits were short lived. As Officer Baker popped each balloon, he
reminded the students that the long term effects of steroid use remain
forever. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) also provided intoxication
glasses. Students performed sobriety tests with and without the glasses.
In each case, they were unable to pass when the glasses were worn.

National Scams
Residents should be aware
of numerous financial scams being conducted on a nationwide basis. An
official type letter will be mailed advising you that you have won a large
sum of money. An official looking check will be enclosed for you to deposit.
You are then requested to send a personal check in various amounts, normally
about $5000 to pay for charges on additional winnings. Your initial winning
check will prove to be fraudulent. Your personal check will be cashed
through a fictitious company.
There are numerous variations on this scam being sent via the U.S. Mail and
the internet. Be aware of “get rich” letters, many emanating from foreign
countries.
