                        THE SEWER AUTHORITY                                                                   SEWER UPDATE
Disposable Cleaning Products submitted by Dick Speilman,, Project Manager

Over the past several years, numerous disposable cleaning products have gone on the market that in many ways make our lives easier. However, many of these can cause problems with our septic systems (both onsite and public sewers.) Products such as Handi-wipes, baby wipes, disposable toilet cleaning pads, paper rags, and many others must be disposed of properly. It is important to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for disposal of these products. Some can be flushed while many others should be thrown into the trash.

Also, disposable diapers should never be flushed. Please do your part to help keep our sewer rates down by disposing of paper products properly according to manufacturers’ recommendations.

It is anticipated that the Township will become full members of the Central Delaware County Authority once the PA Department of Environmental Protection approves our Act 537 Sewage Facilities Plan. At the time of this printing we are waiting for that approval. Once membership is obtained, the Township Sewer Authority will begin to finalize conceptual plans prepared for new sewer installations north of the Route 1 By-Pass. The Township Council has discussed holding a Township wide public information meeting to review the proposed sewer plans once they are finalized and the Sewer Authority decides on an implementation plan. Keep an eye out for notification of a public information meeting or watch the monthly Township Council meeting for updates.

Sewer Backups and Responsibilities

Homeowners with public sewers should review their homeowner insurance policies regarding sewer back-up claims.  The rules of law under the Pennsylvania Political Subdivision Tort Claim Act make it difficult for the Township/Sewer Authority to be held liable for sewer back-ups.
